I'll ask you to block out 60-120 minutes for our initial meeting. This will give us the chance to fully discuss your dog's history, their behaviour, and how we are going to work on the problem. Taking the time to explore the issue will also help you to understand why your dog is behaving the way they do and what you can do about it.
There will be a lot of talking. We will talk about what you want and what your dog wants. After all this is a relationship. My job is to help you get to a good place for both you and your dog. Sometimes discussing the problem can make the solutions that bit more obvious. Often the experiences your dog has been through can affect their behaviour. Therefore it's important that we work together to unpick events as much as we can to get to the cause of the behaviour rather than just dealing with the symptoms.
In between consultations, I am at the end of the phone. I use Whats App with a lot of the dog guardians I work with but we can use phone calls or email too- whatever you prefer. This means you can share your training, successes and questions with me as we work through the behaviour and training plan.
We need a plan. We'll talk about what you're going to do with your dog in each training session, for how long and how often. We'll also talk about how you can manage the problem behaviour while you are training your dog to do something else.
A written report of our discussion, your dog's history, my observations and what we plan to do about the problem. This usually includes links to videos, handouts and step by step training guides. All of this will help you to feel supported as you work on changing your dog's behaviour.
The truth is that I'll be training you as well as your dog. Training will be a part of the consultation but what will really make the difference is the work that you put in in between consultations.
I will work with your vet to deliver the best plan and treatment for you and your dog. This includes regular contact and sharing information including your behaviour and training plan. As part of your consultation, I will usually ask you to complete a veterinary referral form which will give your vet permission to share your pet's clinical history with me. This is important because clinical issues are often involved in behaviour change. Information about your dog's health can help me and your vet to find the best solution for you and your pet.
